Classification of Brass

1. C36000 Free-Cutting Brass

C36000 is widely recognized as the premier alloy for screw machine processing, and it functions as the global reference benchmark with a 100% machinability score for comparing all other metallic materials.

Chemical Makeup: This alloy consists of 60.0%–63.0% copper, 2.5%–3.7% lead, plus zinc as the residual constituent and trace iron contaminants.

Superior Machinability Mechanism: Tiny lead particulates dispersed evenly within the alloy matrix serve as built-in lubricants and chip splitters. 2. C46400 Naval Brass

Ordinary free-cutting brass is prone to dezincification corrosion for parts deployed in corrosive chemical facilities or seawater-exposed marine settings. This deterioration strips zinc out of the alloy selectively, leaving fragile porous copper structures behind.

Chemical Makeup: Roughly 59.0%–62.0% copper and 0.75%–1.20% tin, with zinc accounting for the remaining fraction.

Core Performance Traits: Tin additives grant C46400 strong resistance against seawater corrosion and dezincification. Its lead-free composition, however, reduces machinability to merely 30%–40%, which demands modified feed rates, spindle speeds and flood cooling parameters during our CNC production.

Typical Applications: Underwater sensor enclosures, marine propeller shafts, valve stems and industrial fluid distribution manifolds.

3. Lead-Free Brass Grades (C27450, C69300 Eco Brass)

Toughened international environmental regulations including RoHS, REACH and North America’s Safe Drinking Water Act restrict conventional lead-containing brass for drinking water pipelines and medical apparatus.

Design Optimization Approach: Eco brass replaces lead with silicon, bismuth or selenium additives. These alternatives deliver reliable chip-breaking performance while complying with zero-lead regulatory requirements.

Machining Guidelines: Lead-free brass alloys feature higher hardness. Cutting tools with customized rake angles are necessary to eliminate vibration-induced surface defects during high-speed milling cycles.

Typical Applications: Medical fluid manifolds, potable water valve inserts, food production equipment bushings and wearable consumer device metal fittings.
